Alan Cumming hosted the UN’s first LGBT gala earlier this month. The gala was sponsored by Outright Action International and marks a pinnacle point in the U.N.’s acknowledgement of the LGBT community. It was only in August 2015 that they held the first Security Council meeting spotlighting violence and discrimination against the LGBT+ community. The Scottish actor and activist was pleased to host though felt that one should have taken place much earlier than 2016.

“Well I think it’s sort of like a little chink in the armour of bigotry on a worldwide level because it is symbolic that this is happening in this institution and also kind of ridiculous at the same time that this is the first time anything like this has happened at the U.N.”

The gala took place to honour Yuli Rustinawati, an Indonesian gay rights activist and her organization, Arus Pelangi. Her government is currently considering a law that would view LGBT and human rights defenders as threats to national security.
