Introduction from Jonathan Bartley, Co-Leader of the Green Party

For many of us 2016 was a difficult year.

We watched the politics of hate draw divisions in our communities and the prospect of a tolerant society felt a little further from our reach.

In the UK we saw a rise in LGBTIQA+ hate crime, and a Government that still won’t lift laws which discriminate against LGBTIQA+ people, like those around blood donation.

But there were also many reasons to find hope that an empathy, equal society is still possible. We’ve seen Pride events grow and new ones formed and we will continue to stand proud – to fight for a world where everyone has the freedom to be who they are and love who they love.

The Green Party has always been at the forefront of fighting for LGBTIQA+ rights, and in February last year we appointed the first openly transgender spokesperson of a UK Political Party. We went on to pass policy demanding better laws for trans rights, as well as a raft of measures to campaign for better HIV health care.

There are still challenges, but to people of all sexual orientations and gender identities we say this: we will be by your side every step of the way.
