Gay and Mormon?

During the final week of [American] LGBT History Month, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) released stories of support for LGBT members. Local church leaders hope the move makes a widespread impact for communities in and outside the church, including in eastern Washington.

“This is the chapel,” says Richard Meyer, opening simple doors into a cavernous room with dozens of pews. He walks up to the podium and beckons outward. “This is where I speak every Sunday.”

Meyer is president of the church’s Kennewick stake and spokesperson for southeastern Washington.

He helps oversee 25,000 LDS members in the Tri-Cities area, and says he knows it’s tough to have a big group agree on everything.

“We recognize and understand that some people don’t necessarily believe what we believe, and that’s okay,” Meyer says, smiling. “We believe and teach our members to be accepting and loving of all positions.”
